Why do workouts more than once? Learn, improve, perfect.

People often think that their training needs to be diversified and different each session. That they need to be throwing something new at the body all the time. If we do that how are we to compare our workouts, learn to do them better, and give the body time to adapt?

Doing the same workout more than once doesn’t mean you are actually doing the same workout. No two workouts are ever the same. How you handle the training load each day is different. How you feel each day is different. How you sit on your bike, breathe and pedal each day is different.

By doing workouts more than once we can start to become aware of these changes. We can make comparisons between our experiences. What was good one day and bad the next? How did we adapt to those changes to complete the workout. And did that help make our workout better?

Doing the same workout more than once also allows us to make comparisons: across a block of training or even across your time as a rider. Can you push more watts for the same heart rate, a change in power to heart rate? Or can your heart rate stay stable for the same wattage longer. You won’t know unless you are doing the same workout more than once. As you do your workouts more than once pay attention to the finer details, they will help you become a better rider.
